Live + Loud at Selfridges, Artists & Arts Organisations involved

Selfridges Live + Loud is a festival celebrating “the very best of Birmingham from 1 – 4 October+

“Selfridges Live + Loud, will be exploring captivating ideas in art, fashion, beauty, music and food by bringing together some key creative partners from Birmingham and across the UK.”

A part of this I would like to highlight in particular the West Midlands based artists and arts organisations who are involved:

• P.E.N.D.U.L.U.M Group (students from BCU and City & Guilds of London Art School)
• A Line Drawn from the Eye to the Summit (BCU MA students)
• New Art West Midlands preview and Arts Market Exhibition (before it appears at BMAG)
• Fierce Festival
• Shebeen Sounds

I’ve been sent these profiles of artists involved in L+L:

• Beth Derbyshire – Course Director for Arts and Project Management. Beth has curated the Birmingham School Of Art programme for Live + Loud and has collaborated with Selfridges in both her own artistic projects and with the Birmingham School of Art last year for the Festival of Imagination.
• Simon Preet – MA in Fine Art student from Leamington Spa, Warwickshire. Simon’s work privileges acoustic space over visual space and he utilises noise in the sense of extra-musical sound with an improvisational approach incorporating feedbacks, distortion and processing.
• Anneka French – BCU Graduate in MA History of Art and Design from Birmingham. Anneka is the editorial manager of contemporary art magazine ‘This is Tomorrow’ and the project co-ordinator of the Art Market for New Art WM.
• Jakub Jan Ceglarz – Artist and research at Birmingham School of Art working towards his PhD. Originally from Poland, now living in the city. Jakub is interested in how things become entangled and attracted to each other. He uses photography, video, animation, sound and performance in his work.
• Tadas Stalyga – Artist from Lithuania, now living in Birmingham. His work involves body, sound, vision and technology.
• Tina Mirsharifi – Recent graduate with an MA in Fine Art from BCU. From Tehran, Iran and now living in Derby. Tina creates time-based work which encompasses installation, movements and objects.
• Frederick Hubble – Currently studying for his Masters Degree at the School of Art, having recently achieved a First Class Honours in his Bachelor’s degree. From Stourbridge. Frederick’s work encompasses ideas surrounding gesture – he looks to questions ideas with a sense of finding the hope in hopelessness. Ideas of romantic longing comes through in his work, which are often humorous.
• Sarah Walden – Has recently completed a Masters degree in Fine Art at BCU and won the Ikon Curator’s Choice Award and the Gertrude Aston Bowater Bequest Award for Excellence. Sarah was raised in the American Midwest and now lives in Stratford Upon Avon. Sarah is a film, video and photographic artists working with the space between structuralism and dis-continuity.
• Ally Standing – Recent graduate with an MA in Fine Art. From Birmingham. Ally works with photography and other media to explore the urban environment. She has a keen interest in psychogeography and social-architectural history, especially in Birmingham. Much of her work has reflected Birmingham’s shift in aesthetic values.
• Professor Johnny Golding – Chair of Philosophy and Fine Art at Birmingham School of Art and the Director of the PHD/Post-Doctoral Centre for Fine Art Research. Professor Golding will lead the Exquisite Methods, a sublime pop-up research workstation exposing the bold, alchemic and magical aspects of the kind of practice-led research the school does at the Birmingham School of Art.
• Rachel Bradley – Head of Art at WM, an agency based at Birmingham School of Art. New Art WM develops opportunities for more people to engage with contemporary art through exhibitions, art fairs, networks and events, encouraging audiences to connect with artists, see but and collect new work.
• Mona Casey – Director of Article gallery at Birmingham School of Art. Mona is an artist, curator and writer in both national and international contexts.
