Shout Festival returns to Birmingham 12th-22nd November. My highlights include:-
- The Sissy’s Progress at mac Birmingham. “Nando Messias was beaten up on the street in an act of homophobic hatred. After years of dreaming up his response, he presents The Sissy’s Progress, a spectacle of surprise, questioning and hyper-flamboyance. Part installation, part dance-theatre, part walking performance, the evening engages the violence of city life and the contradictions of gender politics. Join a live marching band, directed by Jordan Hunt, to follow The Sissy’s Progress to its floridly medieval climax.”
- My Beautiful Launderette at Moseley Washeteria “Join us for a truly immersive experience as we proudly screen Hanif Kureishi’s My Beautiful Laundrette in a working Washeteria. Let the tumbled heat and heady aroma of clean linen draw you into the love story of Omar, an ambitious British Asian striving to make it big during 1980s Thatcherism and his lover, former “white punk” Jonny (an early award-winning performance by Daniel Day Lewis).
- Dressed as a Girl at mac Birmingham. “UK director Colin Rothbart in his feature film debut rips off the wigs and wipes away the mascara to find the real people behind the figureheads of East London’s much-hyped alternative drag scene. The Producer and Director will be attending this screening for a question and answer session at mac following the film.”
