MITTWOCH AUS LICHT by Stockhausen, a commission for the London 2012 Festival, produced by Birmingham Opera Company last August in a disused Digbeth factory has been shortlisted for the two top awards in the world of opera.

As well as Birmingham Opera Company, there were two other Birmingham nominees for Royal Philharmonic Society awards announced yesterday too – Andris Nelsons of CBSO (Conductor) and Ex Cathedra (Ensemble).

Birmingham Royal Ballet has announced its 2013-2014 season at Birmingham Hippodrome.

Vivid Projects unravels 24 years of Birmingham’s music history with a very special collection of cassette demos, posters and memorabilia to celebrate Record StoreDay 2013, in partnership with Birmingham Music Archive and The Catapult Club. Scribd release here.

Library of Birmingham launches Dozens and Trails “From the weird to the wonderful at the Library of Birmingham”, a new app showcasing the library’s treasures, built by Substrakt.

Punch Records have announced details about their first ever radio station, BASS.FM, which will be launching in June as part of 2013’s BASS Festival. They’re recruiting a collective of keen young people aged between 14 and 18 to join them on air and gain hands-on experience with insight into the radio industry – so if you know a keen teenager who would be interested, then get in touch with Punch.

New Art West Midlands, showcasing the best new art by emerging West Midlands graduates continues at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and the Barber Institute of Fine Arts until Sunday 19 May 2013. As part of the exhibition both institutions are holding a series of talks and tours listed on Turning Point West Midlands.

RoguePlay theatre have created a new piece of circus theatre for an outdoor performance at the site of Sparkhill swimming baths entitled Leap of Faith. The performances will be followed by free workshops in circus by RoguePlay, and Graffiti by Soul City Arts. 13th and 14th April – performances at 12pm & 3pm. Supersonic Festival presents Barn Owl + Grumbling Fur + Ex Easter Island Head on Saturday 27th April in the Jewellery Quarter – which is worth a mention for the event name alone! More information, including a rather dark flyer, on the Capsule website.

Films produced by final year students of the Film, Production and Technology and the Film, Technology and Visual Effects courses at BCU are to be shown at the Electric Cinema on 24th April, 6-8pm. Man Down festival at The Flapper is ‘A two-part music festival celebrating women in the music industry” and sounds like a good thing.

Monthly things:

Write Time Retreats are one-day events held monthly at The Moseley Exchange for people who are looking for 6 hours of peace and quiet to write in. The next one is Sunday 21st April and more information is on their blog.

Turning Point West Midlands’ Q&A – free monthly Drop-in sessions for Artists in the West Midlands, held at the School of Art Lecture room at BIAD, Margaret Street.

Music and Craft, held at the La CC restaurant in Yardley – is just that – a relaxing monthly Music and Craft evening with local musicians and local crafters selling their wares in a mini-market. More information about the night (next Wednesday 17th April) can be found on this link, which includes a preview of one of the musicians.

  2. And…BCMG’s commission Nature by Tansy Davies is shortlisted for the Royal Philharmonic Society Chamber-Scale composition award and BCMG gave the european premiere of Gerald Barry’s The Importance of Being Earnest, shortlisted for the Large-Scale Composition award.
