The New Art Gallery Walsall have a new exhibition opening on 1 October, which runs until 23 December. Metropolis will bring together a diverse group of artists whose work is concerned with the modern urban environment.

Works have been acquired through Art Fund International, the Art Fund’s £5 million scheme which is helping to build outstanding collections of international contemporary art. The New Art Gallery Walsall, Birmingham Museums & Art Gallery and Ikon Gallery form one of the five consortiums taking part in the initiative. The exhibition represents an interim stage in the collecting process, with the scheme coming to an end in 2012.

Exhibiting artists include: Mohamed Bourouissa, Semyon Faibisovich, Jochem Hendricks, Jitish Kallat, Ola Kolehmainen, Aleksandra Mir, Sharmila Samant, Dayanita Singh, Grazia Toderi and Zhang Enli.

The exhibition will be held on Floor 3, and admission is free.

  • Zhang Enli in Conversation at Ikon.
    On Monday 2 February, artist Zhang Enli will discuss his work and forthcoming exhibition at Ikon which opens on Wednesday 4th.  The event takes place in the Lecture Theatre at the School of Art, Birmingham City University, 6.30pm – 8pm. Places are free but should be reserved by calling Ikon on 0121 248 0708.
  • Gane vs Iddon at Three White Walls Gallery.
    An exhibition of works from landscape photographers Jo Gane and Henry Iddon. The exhibition explores the photographic relationship with the night, where long exposures offer a view of the landscape unseen by the human eye. Runs until 2nd March.
  • Home of Metal open day.
    The third open day is being held on Saturday 7th February at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery 11am – 4.00pm. Fans are encouraged to bring memorabilia along with their personal stories to the gallery to be recorded – all of which will go towards the new digital archive, which aims to tell the true story of the birth place of metal. – Think antiques roadshow for Metal fans!

That’s in addition to the regular ones they’re running on 7 Feb and 7 March from 2-5pm.

    Places are free but need to be reserved in advance.

    The themes for (and links to) these workshops are:

    • 7 Feb – This workshop will explore the themes and ideas of the current Zhang Enli exhibition
    • 17 Feb – This workshop will explore Armando Andrade Tudela’s current exhibition
    • 19 Feb – Zhang Enli again
    • 7 March – Armando Andrade Tudela again

    Also, from 6.30-8pm at the School of Art, Margaret Street, the Ikon will be hosting Zhang Enli and Jiang Jiehong in Conversation (with English interpretation). Again, places are free but should be reserved.
