The project was commissioned by Multistory. Martin was in Sandwell in 2010, he did Walsall last year and this year and next he’ll be in Wolverhampton and Dudley.

He’s also been doing some filming, including this from Teddy Gray’s Sweet Factory:

Established in 1826, Teddy Gray’s has always been a family owned and run business. Five generations have worked and contributed towards the business of keeping the traditional, hand-made methods of sweet making alive.

Internationally renowned visual artist and producer Mohammed Ali will bring together the words of Tshaka Campbell, the sounds of percussionist Daniel Waples together with live-spray painted art.

This bronze sculpture of Sir Jacob Epstien’s 15 year old daughter has inspired the latest exhibition at The New Art Gallery Walsall, The Life of the Mind: Love, Sorrow and Obsession.

The exhibition opened last Friday, and is open until 20 March, curated by artists Bob and Roberta Smith, featuring an eclectic group of historic, modern and contemporary artists including Vincent van Gogh, Tracey Emin, Louise Bourgeois, Theodore Garman, Chris Ofili and Helen Chadwick.

The Life of the Mind seeks to expose the myth of the great male artist who has special insight into the minds of his more frail female subjects… Each artist resists easy interpretation and in Bob’s word, “sticks a sharp pair of scissors into the soft underbelly of male hegemony”.

On 26 February at 2pm, Bob and Roberta Smith will also be in conversation, joined by artist Bobby Baker to discuss the ideas explored within the exhibition.

Artists in residence at The New Art Gallery Walsall, a.s.s., are inviting you to join them for 1 hour sleeping sessions as they experiment with lucid dreaming in The Cage.

Sessions are taking place at 12 noon and 2pm today, next Sunday 12 December and 14 December, and teams of sleepers will attempt to meet up in The Other Place. They also have a few bits of information on lucid dreaming on The Other Place blog.

During the lucid dream training we will be building on this by attempting to dream collectively, trying out different methods and making notes and drawings based on this. We will be explaining and preparing for lucid dreaming beforehand, and discussing experiences afterwards.

If you’d like to participate, make sure you wear comfortable clothes and arrive half an hour before the session’s due to start. Find out more about a.a.s. events and experiments on the website.
