SOUNDkitchen launches with an Opening Banquet tomorrow (17 February), at the Hare & Hounds, as the first in a series of monthly events bringing new and experimental sounds to Birmingham.

The night will bring together emerging Birmingham based composers with established organisations Modulate and Mama Feel Good! along with guest performers from Bristol, Leicester and London. Their aim is to provide professional development with an open environment for sound artists to experiment, collaborate and build networks.

Thursday’s set menu looks to be a tasty affair, with all of this to look forward to;

…incidental DJing from Two Left Ears; a theremin and wii mote performance from Eric Bumstead; live laptop performance by Norah Lorway; Audio-visuals from Martin Clarke (oem records); soundscapes from Simon Whetham; Experimental audio trio performance from Modulate; and an afrobeat and electronica DJ set from Bobbaliní Hot (Mama Feel Good!)

SOUNDkitchen will be serving from 8pm-1am, at £6 entry. For more info and the full menu, visit the SOUNDkitchen website.

Fierce Start Party tonight http://www.createdinbirmingham.com/2010/04/15/fierce-start-party-tonight/ Thu, 15 Apr 2010 10:13:03 +0000 http://www.createdinbirmingham.com/?p=5524 [Read more...]]]> Thursdays have been pretty stuffed with lots of good activities recently but there’s a biggie going on tonight over at AE Harris.

Fierce are hosting the Fierce Start Party with all sorts of things going on.

  • 3-9pm – food, installation, performance
  • 7pm – words
  • 9pm-late – post-party with music

What, you may be asking, is a Start Party?

It’s the beginning of an exciting journey. What will be there? Fierce Festival artists sharing tasters of their work. When’s the next festival? We’ll tell you the shape of Fierce’s next year

Exact details of what’s happening are being kept under wraps but what we do know is that this is tomorrow will be on hand to capture proceedings, bITjAM will be providing audiovisual goodness and Mama Feel Good will be providing tunes. The latter also let slip this:

I’ve heard rumours of vodka soup – lord a mercy

Indeed. Fierce party’s are usually pretty legendary and this is open to all, so don’t miss out.

Mixes from the Bulls Head http://www.createdinbirmingham.com/2010/03/30/mixes-from-the-bulls-head/ http://www.createdinbirmingham.com/2010/03/30/mixes-from-the-bulls-head/#comments Tue, 30 Mar 2010 20:23:54 +0000 http://www.createdinbirmingham.com/?p=5358 [Read more...]]]> Now this I heartily endorse – the clever folk at the Bulls Head in Moseley have been recording mixes by residents and guests at their Freestyle night and uploading them to Mixcloud.

There are mixes from Yam Who?, Steve Cobby (Fila Brazillia), Mama Feel Good, Sam Redmore, Adam Regan and a whole bunch of others. Very nice. Here’s The Bulls Head on Mixcloud.

Is anyone else doing anything similar? There’s the listen again thing on some Rhubarb Radio events but I’m struggling to think of any others. Then again, maybe the copyright issues put some off.

If you’ve not come across Mixcloud it calls itself ‘the YouTube of radio’ and is basically somewhere to upload radio shows, podcasts, mixes and mixtapes. If you’re interested in that kind of thing then maybe cast a glance at Soundcloud and Bandcamp – they each do slightly different things but aren’t too far removed from each other.

spinwell

Spinwell is a blog dedicated to fixed wheel/single speed cycling, the writer is Blacksmile and he covers the scene’s bikes, fashion, art and all that sort of goodness.

It’s also worth mentioning Fix Up Look Sharp Birmingham, who organise occasional races and such. There must be more local sites like this, but unfortunately my internet connection is testing my patiences. Feel free to chuck a link or two in the comments.

By the way, Amy’s been sweetening up the Mama Feel Good website. Have a look around and definitely grab the free mixes if you haven’t already.
