2010 Year in Review: November http://www.createdinbirmingham.com/2011/01/09/2010-year-in-review-november/ Sun, 09 Jan 2011 13:21:32 +0000 http://www.createdinbirmingham.com/?p=8693 [Read more...]]]> Capital’s first Festival of New Writing took place, International Project Space launched a new film programme and the final ARC of 2010 took place with Important Artefacts.

Brilliantly Birmingham kicked off together with the fifth annual FLUX exhibition, Aedas Presents launched a new monthly art programme and Art of Ideas finally arrived with a host of associated events running over four days.

The We Are Birmingham Shop opened its doors with a drinks reception, Chris gave a debrief of the Arts Council briefing on funding and the West Midlands creative jobs board, Jobplot, returned with a fresh makeover.

November also saw the launch of The Pilot Project, Jennifer Tee’s exhibition, Memento Park opened at Eastside Projects, and Chris attended the wedding of the year.

Lucy McLauchlan returned with her paintbrushes to add something a little interesting to the Moseley Road hoardings, while VIVID launched their latest project, Language, and as December approached, the Christmas fairs sprung into action.

As winter kicked in, we bid a Blonde Farewell to Ikon Eastside, got crafty with Craftspace, said hello to Creative Central and looked ahead to Flatpack and Fierce’s joint 2011 venture.

Remember when we mentioned those huge birds painted on the side of Central Library? Well artist Lucy McLauchlan has been busy yet again, out in the cold with a group of volunteers jazzing up another part of the city, this time in Moseley.

Together with EC-Arts and a little help from the Irish Welfare Information Centre & Birmingham Irish Community Forum, ‘Come Together’ is a temporary artistic intervention utilising the hoardings on Moseley Road.

The project is a result of both EC-Arts objectives to utilise redevelopments within transitional periods, and artist Lucy McLauchlan’s ongoing desire to create a positive impact with her work in the public realm.

Lucy has created ‘Come together’ a theme inspired by the Digbeth community. Her infamous bird murals depict ‘community’ to counterbalance the wasteland the site envelops.

Birds ‘perch’ on Central Library http://www.createdinbirmingham.com/2010/08/09/birds-perch-on-central-library/ http://www.createdinbirmingham.com/2010/08/09/birds-perch-on-central-library/#comments Mon, 09 Aug 2010 07:51:47 +0000 http://www.createdinbirmingham.com/?p=6502 [Read more...]]]> Lucy McLauchlan

If you’ve wandered by Central Library recently, you’ll have noticed a new addition to the decor.

Painted over the course of three days, artist Lucy McLauchlan was given permission by Central Library and Birmingham City Council Planning to give the infamous brutalist library a make over. The project is part of the ongoing work of EC-Arts.

It was Lucy’s wish to produce one of her infamous murals in Birmingham to simply ‘beautify the city’. This coupled with EC-Arts motivation to commission artistic interventions, temporary and permanent within the public realm, utilising architecture where possible was the foundation for the Library project.

Lucy’s written a post about it with a few more pictures.

It’s still unknown as to how long the birds will be allowed to stay, so go take a look while you can.

MOM – a meeting of minds http://www.createdinbirmingham.com/2010/06/07/mom-a-meeting-of-minds/ http://www.createdinbirmingham.com/2010/06/07/mom-a-meeting-of-minds/#comments Mon, 07 Jun 2010 13:08:51 +0000 http://www.createdinbirmingham.com/?p=6010 [Read more...]]]> There’s been lots of examples of Birmingham artists banding together to do stuff and put on shows together recently – Not My Type, the Grand Union, stuff happening at the Lombard Method, the Freestyle/Untitled exhibitions at the Hare and Hounds and plenty more besides.

The next one to add to that list is the Meeting of Minds exhibition (also mentioned on Best Believe) which is the next up in the series of really rather excellent exhibitions at the Sauce Gallery.

This one brings together a bunch of people I’ve heard of (Lucy McLauchlan, Mac 1, Matt Watkins, Gavin Campbell) and a bunch I’m as yet ignorant of (Andy Tattoo, Glenn Anderson, Jon Paul Hollinsworth, Kevin Kafesu, Guy Carlos, Kosmic Neil, Lisa Travers, Richard Coldicott, Skank, Stuart Styles, Tony Graffiti and Victor TX).

The launch party will be on Thursday 24 June from 5pm at the Sauce Gallery (Custard Factory).

several voices from Birmingham’s Creative Community, with disciplines spanning Music to Design, Photography to Fine Art, collectively exploring the idea of an online magazine in the form of a blog…

Many authors, bringing their own fresh perspectives…

Those authors include 7 Inch Cinema, Capsule, Geoffrey Dolman, Lucy McLauchlan and Surely? At the moment it seems to be aggregating content from their existing blogs (from what I can tell – probably using WP-o-matic, blog fans). It’ll be interesting to see where this goes.
