Some fundraising requests

There are two organisations after some support at the moment.

mac are after the last little bit of funds they need to cover their refurbishment. They’re not too far off by the sound of things (it’s the last 1% they’re after) and are hoping enough people can be tempted to donate a fiver or so (more if poss). I just chipped in.

To sweeten the deal they’ve put up a little gamey thing you can play with called Famous for Five.

Rather more ambitiously, this story went up on the Birmingham Post website today:

Birmingham City Council wants to raise £34 million from local people and businesses to go towards the £189 million cost of the library in Centenary Square

Project Brutal

Project Brutal: Initial Meeting: 20th April 6:30-7:30pm. CiB Shop.

Project Brutal is a plan to bring together people and networks interested in creatively celebrating and capturing Birmingham’s Brutal library before it’s too late. We’re looking to formulate a series of events and projects under the Brutal banner over an extended period of time.

So if you’re passionate about the library’s architecture, space and history and are keen to find out more and get involved in making this a reality then come and join us on April 20th

A meeting to gauge interest in a new photography collective. Aimed at people who are post college, with some experience of exhibiting who want to discuss work, creating exhibitions and inviting guest speakers etc

The current Exhibition In The Window at Birmingham Library on Chamberlain Square is of Janice Rider‘s work and will be in place until 12 September 2008.

Inspired by Degas’ Little Fourteen Year Old Dancer, Janice Rider examines her own evolving identity through a series of poignant, often humourous photographs, metaphorically encapsulating the fear and anxiety of the ageing process and physical desire and longing for unattainable lost dreams of youth

Mecanoo win the contract to design Birmingham Library

I have no real intention of following the interminable shenanigans surrounding the new library.Â However, I reckon it’s worth announcing that the contract to design the new building has been given to Mecanoo (whose buildings had better be more attractive and useable than their website).

The new library, which at the rate things seem to be going won’t be built in any of our lifetimes (although 2013 has been mooted), is to be built in Centenary Square and will incorporate The REP, who have been quick to report on the appointment.
