{"id":412,"date":"2014-09-02T17:39:33","date_gmt":"2014-09-02T17:39:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bhamobscura.com\/?p=412"},"modified":"2014-09-09T13:26:34","modified_gmt":"2014-09-09T13:26:34","slug":"inspirational-obscura-greenport-long-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/bhamobscura.com\/2014\/09\/inspirational-obscura-greenport-long-island\/","title":{"rendered":"Inspirational Obscura: Greenport, Long Island"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While searching for something else (as is always the way) I came across this rather delightfully designed camera obscura in Long Island.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shoparc.com\/project\/Camera-Obsura\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bhamobscura.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2014\/09\/01_20.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shoparc.com\/project\/Camera-Obsura\">designed and built in 2005 by SHoP Architects<\/a> and has a lovely modern swoop to it, updating the traditional round tower and fitting in nicely with the harbourside environs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shoparc.com\/project\/Camera-Obsura\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bhamobscura.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2014\/09\/02_18.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Not sure what\u2019s up with those glowing slits in the wall though\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.shoparc.com\/project\/Camera-Obsura\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bhamobscura.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2014\/09\/03_151.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a <a href=\"http:\/\/brightbytes.com\/cosite\/greenport.html\">nice report on the Magic Mirror site<\/a>\u00a0from 2007 which has some good nerdy photos of the apparatus. Interesting to note they solved the focussing issue by having the table itself go up and down.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/villageofgreenport.org\/camera-obscura-mitchell-park-greenport-village.php\">According to this tourism site<\/a>\u00a0the camera is still functioning a decade later though by appointment only.
