In an early establishing scene the character Alexandria notices the shadows on the wall are moving\u2026<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bhamobscura.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2014\/08\/pete_3.gif\" alt=\"pete_3\" width=\"500\" height=\"269\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-165\"><\/p>\n<p>It turns out the sun is low in the sky behind a horse in the courtyard and the shadows cast are being focussed through the keyhole. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bhamobscura.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2014\/08\/pete_4.gif\" alt=\"pete_4\" width=\"500\" height=\"269\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-168\"><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bhamobscura.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2014\/08\/Screen-Shot-2014-08-14-at-00.14.45.png\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2014-08-14 at 00.14.45\" width=\"500\" height=\"269\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-166\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.ash10.com\/bhamobscura\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2014\/08\/Screen-Shot-2014-08-14-at-00.14.45.png 634w, http:\/\/www.ash10.com\/bhamobscura\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2014\/08\/Screen-Shot-2014-08-14-at-00.14.45-300x161.png 300w, http:\/\/www.ash10.com\/bhamobscura\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2014\/08\/Screen-Shot-2014-08-14-at-00.14.45-624x335.png 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Beyond being a lovely little scene it raises an interesting question. Is this techincally a camera obscura or is it a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Magic_lantern\">magic lantern<\/a> effect? We\u2019re of the opinion that the image in a camera obscura is made up of <em>reflected<\/em> light while the image in this scene is formed by blocking the light and casting a shadow. Are we wrong?<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t really matter though. The film is a criminally underlooked gem (comparisons might be The Princess Bride and Life of Pi) that you should definitely seek out.
